We are all potential liars , pretentious characters ; even the most truthful ones among us. This is because we are trying to hide our true feelings, our true thoughts and present them to the world in a way they would like to see or the way we would like them to understand. This is true for almost all of us, though the level of pretension and presentation may differ enormously from person to person.
When we present our created truth to others, successfully, it feels good about being able to fool them into believing it. This works fine in some cases and people do believe what is presented to them. This may be a case when we are dealing with either strangers, ignorant or dumb people. However, with other people it just doesn't work. Though, they may play back our own trick and respond in agreement, but deep within their heart, they know it all.
Our family, friends, colleagues, people who may interact with us often and some smart (knowledgeable of the topic of discussion or worldly affairs) people understand beyond what we tell them. They understand (to a good extent) our motive behind the words, have an idea about any false content in our conversation and can make out what role we want them to play.
Few situations from real life may help understand this better.
When Robert (who doesnt usually share information with colleagues), offers a knowledge sharing session in office and invites boss Helena, she knows that Robert wants to impress her for a good appraisal and his colleagues also understand this.
When Suraj is sweet with parents and starts talking about some upcoming event in college at length, his parents know that he may ask for money to participate in the same. This intution comes much before he mentions about it and they have already done their calculations by then.
Lila holds jealousy against Maya in her heart and secretly compares herself with her. She wants to get more grades in studies, look better and have more friends than Maya. She dislikes when Maya does well in any field as it makes her feel low. However, on face she shows liking to Maya and praises her looks and good grades. What do you think Maya understands, the praise or the hidden jealousy? Of course, she can see through the appreciation and spot the jealousy.
We can think of incidents in our own life and would realize that no matter how much we pretend with these people who know us or pay attention to us, they
understand what we want. We may act very clever or they may be busy and hence we may deceive them momentarily. However, if they think about the incident and pay attention, they would know our hidden thoughts almost always.
Does it make any sense to try hard to learn all tactics of masking our true feelings and intentions with our close ones or daily counterparts? Don't you think, we actually deceive ourselves when trying to deceive them. Though, we may be fooled in thinking we have been able to put up a good show, these people understand what's going on in our heads. They know more about us, than we imagine or realise. Our friends shall not tell us their observation of our behavior and conclusions they have drawn. However, during each interaction people form an impression of each other and deal accordingly. This impression is based on the truth they see behind all our masks and manipulations. Sometimes, due to social pressure, greed, fear etc., the world may still behave good to a false person on face but they do not think good of him. This is again a pretentious behaviour for some motives. This can be termed as 360 degrees of double-facedness.
Can we thereby conclude that if we are true, others may trust and respect us much more. They may listen to us, respond quickly and sincerely and hold us in dignity. People decide what one deserves based on his true self and not a created or presented self. They know it all.
